Shopping with kids

It seems like every time I take my kids with me to the store they want be to purchase something for them. Sometimes I just have the exact money, and do not want to use any card or spend more than I intend to. So I went to Walmart a few days ago to purchase a few items, it was early in the morning, Sunday I believe it was, just wanted to grab a few things so that I would not have to stop after Church. While heading downstairs one of my sons saw me, ” mom are you going to the store? yes son I am,  “can I come with you? No go back to bed I will be back shortly. Please mom, OK. So I got him dressed and we took off. I picked up the items and headed to the cashier. “Mom can I have this? A big bag of Munchies Cheese Fix for $3.29. Well let me purchase my items first and if I’m able to pay for it I will. He was hugging the chips with excitement as if it was already purchased! After paying for my items I did not have enough left to pay for the chips. So I told him son I do not have enough to cover the chips so you’re gonna have to put it back. “Mom what about your credit card?” So I took the chip and I gave it to the cashier and told her we won’t be getting that. He was sad all the way home!

Should I have gotten the chips for him?

Did I do the right thing?

Sometimes as parents when we make a decision we revisit the decision that we made and think about what was done, whether it was fair to our child, or whether we did the right thing. Remember we are not perfect we learn from our mistakes everyday.

    I had the same problems with my children when they were younger. My young son when he was a baby would get into a tantrum inside the store if he did not have the toy he wanted.
    Unfortunately, I had to give in many times because he had a heart problem and I could not afford to let him cry until he fainted.
    Sometimes our decisions for the children are painful, but we have to remember that if they are for their own good, then they must be done.
    I always tell them that they will hate me now but later they will love me when they turn out to be independent and solid adults.

    I never gave in to my step kids. But if I said something was going to happen (a promise) I always followed through. I think they all came to appreciate consistency.

    I’m totally in that boat with my 5 yr old.
    I try to bring snacks and never leave the house on an empty stomach. Those 2 things prevent impulse buying.

    Sometimes I give the items she grabs to the cashier but tell her not to ring them up that way my munchkin has no idea we didn’t purchase the items until we get home. That prevents a screaming scene in the store.
